What SKY is, what it is not, and how to learn it
SKY Breath Meditation is the internationally used name for Sudarshan Kriya, the core technique of the Art of Living Part 1 course. It is a rhythmic breathing practice with a specific structure of breath cycles, taught exclusively in a live setting by certified teachers. It is not a spiritual exercise, though it originates within the Art of Living tradition founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 1981. It is practical, teachable and designed to be maintained as a daily personal practice.

What SKY Breath Meditation actually is
SKY Breath Meditation — formally called Sudarshan Kriya — is a rhythmic breathing technique developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and first taught in 1982. It has been the core element of the Art of Living Part 1 course ever since. The technique involves a specific sequence of breath cycles moving through slow, medium and fast rhythms, each with a defined pace and duration. The sequence is learned over three days with a certified teacher and is then practised independently each day.
The word Sudarshan Kriya translates roughly as a purifying action that gives a correct vision of oneself — but this context is less important for most practitioners than what the technique actually does. What it does, according to a significant number of published studies and a very large body of practitioner experience, is produce a particular quality of physiological rest and nervous system regulation that is difficult to achieve through other means.
The research behind SKY
Academic interest in Sudarshan Kriya began in the late 1990s and has grown steadily since. Research published in peer-reviewed journals has investigated the technique across a range of populations — students, veterans, adults with elevated stress markers, individuals experiencing low mood — and across a range of outcomes including cortisol, interleukin levels, heart rate variability and self-reported anxiety and wellbeing measures.
The results are broadly consistent and broadly positive. This does not mean SKY is a treatment for any clinical condition. Art of Living does not make that claim and the research does not support it. What the evidence suggests is that a practice of this kind, performed regularly, has measurable effects on the physiological systems associated with stress and recovery. Practising SKY after properly learning it is different from practising it after watching a video, which is part of why live teacher instruction is a non-negotiable element of the course.
How to learn SKY officially in Germany
The Art of Living Part 1 course is the only official way to learn Sudarshan Kriya. It runs over three consecutive days — in person and live online — and costs 295 euros. English-friendly sessions are available in Germany, reflecting the country's large international population. The course is the same curriculum taught in over 150 countries; there is no Germany-specific variation.
What you learn in the course:
- The complete SKY breath sequence in the correct order and at the correct rhythms
- Preparatory pranayama practices that support the main technique
- Guided meditation appropriate for beginners and those with existing practice
- A daily home routine that takes 20 to 30 minutes and is fully self-contained
- The physiological background that helps you understand what the practice is doing
The Part 1 course is ZPP-certified under the German prevention framework, which means German statutory health insurers may reimburse part or all of the 295-euro fee. Eligibility varies by insurer.
After the Part 1 course
Many participants find the Part 1 course sufficient as a standalone foundation. For those who want to continue, the Sahaj Samadhi meditation course teaches effortless mantra meditation as a complement to SKY. The Art of Living silent retreat at Bad Antogast in the Black Forest — from 790 euros including accommodation and full board — offers a 5 or 6-day immersive environment in which daily SKY practice forms the anchor of each day. Neither is required, and there is no pressure to continue beyond what you find useful.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Is SKY Breath Meditation the same as Sudarshan Kriya?
Yes. SKY Breath Meditation is the internationally used name for Sudarshan Kriya Yoga, the core technique taught in the Art of Living Part 1 course. The full name is Sudarshan Kriya; SKY Breath Meditation is used in English-language contexts for clarity. The technique, the curriculum and the certification process are identical.
Why can SKY only be learned with a live teacher?
Sudarshan Kriya involves specific breath cycles at precise rhythms and transitions. Getting these right — particularly in the first days of learning — requires real-time feedback that video or audio cannot provide. A certified teacher observes your practice, adjusts your technique and answers questions that arise from direct experience. This is how the practice has been taught since it was developed, and it is why the technique has a consistent effect across very different individuals and contexts.
What does the research on SKY actually say?
Studies have examined SKY's relationship to cortisol levels, heart rate variability, autonomic nervous system function and self-reported measures of stress, anxiety and wellbeing. The findings across multiple studies are broadly positive. It would be inaccurate to call any single finding definitive, and Art of Living does not make clinical claims. What the research collectively suggests is that the technique has measurable physiological effects that are consistent with its reported experiential benefits.
Is SKY a religious practice?
No. SKY Breath Meditation originates within the Art of Living tradition and was developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The technique itself involves no religious content, ritual or belief requirement. It is taught alongside meditation and yoga in the Part 1 course, which has a broadly humanistic rather than sectarian orientation. Participants from all backgrounds and none attend without any issue.
How is SKY different from box breathing, pranayama or other breathwork methods?
SKY is a complete, structured practice with a specific sequence of breath cycles rather than a single technique or a general category. It is different from box breathing (a symmetrical 4-count method developed in a clinical context) and from classical pranayama (which encompasses many techniques practised individually). It is taught only within the Art of Living curriculum and only by certified teachers. Art of Living does not make comparative claims about other methods, but SKY has a distinct structure that sets it apart from most commonly known approaches.
How long does it take to learn and how much time does daily practice require?
The course runs over three days. After completing it, the daily home practice takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Most participants find a morning slot easiest to maintain. The practice is self-contained and does not require an app, a recording or a subscription once learned.
