Life in Berlin moves fast — and the body keeps score

  • Living between languages and cultures creates a low-level cognitive load that accumulates over time
  • A busy expat social calendar can feel connecting and draining at the same time
  • You have tried apps or YouTube meditations but the benefits feel shallow and inconsistent
  • German-language courses are available but the effort of following instruction in a second language defeats the purpose
  • Long working hours and commuting leave little margin for structured self-care
  • You want something you can actually maintain once you return to your regular routine

One weekend. A practice you keep for life.

The Art of Living Part 1 course — known internationally as the SKY Breath Meditation course — teaches Sudarshan Kriya in a structured 3-day format with a certified teacher. You learn a complete breathing practice that you can do independently every day. The course runs in person in Berlin and online. English-friendly sessions are available.

Why Berlin expats find SKY particularly useful

Settling into a new city asks more of the nervous system than most people expect. Beyond the practical logistics — language, bureaucracy, finding community — there is a subtler adjustment: recalibrating to an environment where almost nothing is automatic. Berlin is generous in many ways, but it is also a city that runs at speed. Many people who move here notice that the background level of alertness rises and does not come back down on its own.

The Art of Living Part 1 course addresses this directly. Sudarshan Kriya — known internationally as SKY Breath Meditation — is a rhythmic breathing technique that works through the autonomic nervous system. It is not relaxation in the conventional sense. It is a structured practice that you learn once and then own. Participants regularly describe a shift in their baseline: not a dulling of alertness but a reduction in the unproductive vigilance that consumes energy without delivering anything.

What the 3-day course actually involves

The Part 1 course runs over three consecutive days. In Berlin, sessions are available both in person and online. Each day builds on the previous one:

  • Day one introduces the foundations of the breath, the physiology behind the practice and your first complete SKY session
  • Day two deepens the technique, adds pranayama elements and includes guided meditation alongside time for questions
  • Day three completes the practice sequence, focuses on integration and gives you a clear daily home routine to follow afterwards

The course is taught by certified Art of Living teachers. Instruction is live — not recorded — and the teacher responds to what is actually happening in the room or on the call. This is relevant because breathing techniques of this depth benefit from real-time guidance that no video or app can provide.

English-friendly options in Berlin

Art of Living has been teaching in Germany for decades and has a well-established presence in Berlin. English-friendly sessions are a regular part of the offering, reflecting the city's genuinely international character. That said, not every date is delivered in English, so it is worth confirming when you enquire.

If a particular in-person date does not work, the online option is a straightforward alternative. The live online format is taught by the same certified teachers, covers the same curriculum and is available to participants anywhere in Europe. English-language online sessions are available alongside the in-person Berlin programme.

After the course: building a lasting practice

One of the more common observations from participants is that the technique is simpler to maintain than they expected. The daily practice takes 20 to 30 minutes. It does not require a particular setting, special equipment or a specific time of day — though most people find a consistent morning slot easiest to protect. Because you have learned the technique properly with a teacher, you do not need to return to an app or a guided recording. The practice is yours.

Art of Living also runs follow-up sessions and an ongoing community in Berlin, which participants can attend after completing the course. For those who want to go further, the Sahaj Samadhi meditation course and the silent retreat at Bad Antogast in the Black Forest are natural next steps. Neither is required — many people attend the Part 1 course and find that it is exactly what they needed, nothing more.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Do I need any prior experience with meditation or yoga?

No prior experience is needed. The course is designed for complete beginners as well as people who already have some meditation background. The instruction is step-by-step and the teacher works with you at your own pace.

Are the Berlin courses really taught in English?

English-friendly sessions are available, though not every date has full English delivery. When you enquire, the team will confirm which upcoming dates suit English speakers best. If a fully English-language online session fits your schedule better, that option is also available.

What is the difference between attending in person and attending online?

Both formats use the same curriculum and a live certified teacher. In-person attendance in Berlin gives you the group dynamic and the ability to be physically guided through the breathing technique. Online attendance is live and interactive — not pre-recorded — and is a practical option if your schedule or location makes in-person attendance difficult.

How long does the daily practice take once the course is finished?

The daily home practice takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Most participants fit it into their morning before work. The course teaches you how to structure it so it becomes a routine rather than an effort.

Is the course eligible for health insurance reimbursement?

The Part 1 course is ZPP-certified under the German prevention programme, which means German public health insurance providers may reimburse part or all of the 295-euro course fee. Eligibility depends on your specific insurer. Ask your Krankenkasse directly or contact the team for guidance.
